Professional photographers were switching to digital, ever since professional SLR cameras became available. SLR stands for single lens reflex, and means basically that what you see is what you shoot. The possibility of porting existing lenses to digital helped a lot. Nowadays digital is the way to go, many photographers that still shoot on film are either trying to do art or losing the race. But the digital platform brought several needs of photographers to attention. The many options and enhancements that the technology brought, together with the increased amount of photographs a pro is able to shoot per event, added to the requirement for a digital tool which would organize and lighten the workflow and all associated routine work, making the boring stuff easy to handle and fast to get rid of. Several software companies hurried to jump into the market niche, the biggest ones were Apple and Adobe. Apple, making only Macintosh compatible software, was immediately losing the battle, unless the competition did bad work. Adobe left nothing to chance.
