Professional photographers were switching to digital, ever since professional SLR cameras became available. SLR stands for single lens reflex, and means basically that what you see is what you shoot. The possibility of porting existing lenses to digital helped a lot. Nowadays digital is the way to go, many photographers that still shoot on film are either trying to do art or losing the race. But the digital platform brought several needs of photographers to attention.
